Seven Oregon State Police troopers, along with two drug detection canines, received the Oregon Department of Transportation Safety Division’s Looking Beyond the Traffic Ticket awards during the annual safety conference October 21. The troopers were honored in the “Routine Stop/Motorist Assist” category, recognizing officers who performed a routine traffic or motorist assist stop and developed probable cause that subsequently uncovered evidence of a more serious crime.

Sr. Tpr. Clint Prevett was recognized for a traffic stop during which a thorough investigation led to the driver and passenger being arrested on multiple charges, and Tpr. Javier Marquez Jr.’s close attention to a driver’s nervousness led to several charges of a convicted criminal. Tpr. Jake Ledbetter was recognized for a traffic stop and subsequent investigation where the subject was charged with multiple counts of laundering a monetary instrument and trademark counterfeiting, among other charges.

Sr. Tpr. Terry Miller was recognized for a traffic stop and subsequent investigation that led to the recovery of stolen goods. Tpr. Justin Oxenrider was on patrol when his keen observations led to the DUI arrest of a man who was later found to be a bank robber. In addition, Sr. Tprs. Greg Costanzo and Joseph Delgreco were recognized with their two drug detection canines for their commitment in criminal apprehension.

The ODOT annual award program recognizes Oregon law enforcement officers for their active enforcement of traffic laws and a commitment to traffic safety. The award demonstrates a correlation between traffic enforcement and the detection and apprehension of criminal violators.
