Cops for a Cure pits troopers against other officers
The Cops for a Cure team often keeps a busy basketball schedule to raise money to help fight cancer. The group of New York State Police members of various ranks and assignments from around St. Lawrence County has been challenging other basketball teams for the past four years to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The team was originally formed because a sergeant in the zone had a child with cancer. They continue playing to help others with the disease. “This is the ideal opportunity for officers to share camaraderie and friendly competition, while raising money for a worthwhile cause,” said Tpr. Connor Sutton, Cops for a Cure team leader.
They have successfully taken on staffs of various school districts, hospitals, and even other police departments in the upstate New York area. With several more basketball games remaining this year, as well as a fundraiser golf tournament, the team’s goal is to raise over $5,000 in the fight against cancer. On April 4 police officers from several local, county, state, and federal departments, battled it out on the court of the State University of New York Potsdam Campus, with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department walking away with bragging rights for the year. |
