Golfers again raise money for AAST scholarships

The tournament director gives appreciation awards each year to those who go above the call of duty to make the tournament a success. This year’s plaque recipients included, left to right, Dave Heltman of Walmart Distribution; Sam Lyons and Carol Sumski, tournament volunteer staff members; Frank L. AAST’s state director in Pennsylvania saw an opportunity to help raise money for AAST programs, and he incorporated one of his favorite hobbies.

Frank M. Thomas, who retired from the Pennsylvania State Police in 1995 and has served as AAST’s state director since 2000, planned a four-man scramble golf tournament in 2003 that brought in money to help provide services for AAST members. His AAST-sponsored golf tournaments have since become an annual – and very popular – event.

“Most members probably have no idea how costly AAST member benefits are,” Thomas said. “The golf tournament is one way to offset some of the expenses while providing camaraderie for Pennsylvania troopers.”

The winner of the 7th Annual AAST Pennsylvania Golf Scramble with a score of 58 was the team of, left to right, Monty Bloom, Jason Bloom, Andy Timchak, and Adam Timchak. This is the second time this foursome has claimed the win at an AAST tournament.

This year’s tournament, held at the Dubois, Pa., Country Club July 11, drew 132 golfers, double the number at the inaugural event, and was staffed by volunteers from the AAST Pennsylvania chapter.

“Pennsylvania troopers are proud to help with this important cause while having a great time on the course,” Thomas said. “In the day and age of a fledgling economy, this is an important time to help raise the money that funds AAST scholarships and other benefits.”

This year’s event yielded $1,500 for the AAST Scholarship Foundation. The 2010 AAST Pennsylvania Golf Tournament is slated for July 10.
