State Police Officer, Justin Hare, was shot and killed at about 5:30 am (3/15/24) after being dispatched to assist a stranded motorist.  While conducting a welfare check on a disabled vehicle near mile marker 320 on I-40, west of Tucumcari, Hare, stopped behind the vehicle. The driver exited and walked to the cruiser's passenger window. The two had a short discussion, and as Hare offered to drive the man into town, the subject suddenly produced a handgun and shot him. Hare was then shot a second time before the driver pushed him into the passenger seat. Hare was then abducted, and the suspect stole the patrol car. The patrol car was abandoned approximately 16 miles away.  State Police Officer, Hare, was found on the frontage road of I-40 and taken to a local hospital where he tragically succumbed to his wounds two hours later.

State Police Officer, Hare, lived in the Quay County city of Logan and grew up in Moriarty, just east of Albuquerque.

Officer Hare is survived by his girlfriend, two children, mother, father, and brother.Line
